This guide ranks the top 10 running backs currently available in Madden 26 Ultimate Team, based on in-game performance, abilities, and availability. The list excludes cards that cannot be purchased on the auction house or are no longer obtainable. Selection Criteria

Three rules determine which cards qualify for this ranking:

No top 100 players – These are excluded from consideration.

No head-to-head ranked cards – Limited availability excludes them.

No cards that cannot be purchased on the auction house – Gold Plated Team of the Year Champions (Breece Hall, Bijan Robinson) are excluded because they cannot be bought.

No free cards that are no longer obtainable – Example: Free Agent Rico Dowdle (promo ended). Sugar Rush Marion Hampton will be excluded from future rankings for this reason.

Multiple versions of the same player – Only one version is ranked. For example, Ricky Williams has 99 and 98 overall versions. Only the 99 is discussed.

Honorable Mentions

The following cards are good but do not make the top 10:

James Conner, David Montgomery, Montee Ball – Fun on theme teams but not exceptional outside of them.

Emmitt Smith – Could have been top 10 but was edged out.

Lucky Irving – Solid on Buccaneers theme teams.

Terrell Davis – Very good but ultimately excluded.

Team of the Year Bijan Robinson and Breece Hall – Bijan was ranked 11th. Still very good, especially on theme teams.

Team of the Year Michael Vick – Unclear if new accounts can obtain him. His halfback card has excellent movement.

The Top 10 Running Backs

Number 10: Ricky Williams (99 Overall Team Diamond LTD)

Stats: 5'10", 230 lbs, 97 speed, 98 acceleration, 96 change of direction, 99 trucking, 99 break tackle.

Why he ranks: Very similar stats to Bijan Robinson. The deciding factor is that Team Diamond LTDs have two Season 7 ability buckets. The 97 overall version is not top 10 (approximately top 20). Use the 99 overall version.

Note: Derrick Henry has 88 change of direction, which is insufficient for this ranking. The Ultimate Collector Series Derrick Henry (97 or 98 overall) is good, but locking in BND Iceman is preferred over BND Derrick Henry.

Number 9: Eric Dickerson (Season 7 Field Pass – Free)

Overview: The best free running back in the game. Better than Michael Vick.

Why he ranks: For a free card, he is unexpectedly effective. He does not have the greatest ability stack and lacks free Human Joystick. However, he gets Human Joystick at tier 4, which is significant.

Recommendation: If you need a new running back, Eric Dickerson is a very strong option.

Number 8: Adrian Peterson (Sugar Rush)

Overview: A strong card with a significant flaw.

Stats and abilities: No Human Joystick. He has a starting glowing X-Factor (Freight Train). However, Sugar Rush glowing X-Factors expire in four days from the time of this guide.

The problem: Without Human Joystick, his movement is not top tier. For running backs, movement is essential. After the glowing X-Factor expires, he lacks top-tier movement abilities.

Verdict: Very good on theme teams, but the inability to compete with standard ability stacks is a notable drawback.

Number 7: Kenneth Walker (Released February)

Overview: One of the most consistent running back cards since February.

Stats and abilities: Starting glowing X-Factor Freight Train (4 AP cost, not 8 AP). He has Season 6 ability buckets, making him somewhat expensive to run. He also has all 32 team chemistries.

Cost consideration: The author recommends spending most of your ability points on running backs and quarterbacks (currently 9 AP on running back).

Future outlook: He may rise in rankings once Sugar Rush glowing X-Factors leave other cards.

Number 6: Arian Foster (Sugar Rush)

Overview: A solid card with Sugar Rush Freight Train.

Limitation: Two better running backs dropped during his promo: Devonta Freeman and Marion Hampton. He falls behind both.

Number 5: Steve Smith (98 Overall Ultimate Legend)

Overview: A top five running back built like Tavon Austin.

Stats: 5'9", 195 lbs, 97 speed (98 with Sugar Rush strategy item, 99 on 20/20 Sugar Rush theme team), 99 acceleration, 88 trucking, 99 break tackle. Has Sugar Rush Freight Train.

Speed considerations: After this week, his speed will be 97. It is unclear if EA will nerf the Sugar Rush strategy item bonuses. For now, he is very fast and effective.

Number 4: Reggie Bush (Gold Team of the Year)

Overview: A beast at 6'0", 205 lbs.

Stats: 97 speed, 96 acceleration, 98 break tackle, 98 change of direction.

Abilities: No starting X-Factor. Has Ultimate Freight Train (not a glowing X-Factor). Has all 32 team chemistries. Has passive X-Factors that will expire in a few days.

Ability note: Does not get Freight Train. Gets "Yak 'Em Up" (essentially Freight Train for receivers). The author runs "Trust" on him to prevent fumbles (he fumbled three times in three games). If you throw to your running back, "Yak 'Em Up" is extremely effective.

Number 3: Marion Hampton (Sugar Rush)

Overview: Available for purchase in the store. Requires 8,000 carrots to fully max out.

Stats: 98 speed, 98 acceleration, 97 break tackle, 99 trucking. Has Freight Train. Does not have all team chemistries.

Verdict: A very good Sugar Rush running back.

Number 2: Devonta Freeman (Sugar Rush)

Overview: The first Sugar Rush running back released (after Adrian Peterson) and still the best in terms of movement.

Stats: 5'9", 188 lbs, 98 speed, 98 acceleration, good change of direction. Has starting X-Factors.

Why he ranks second: His movement is superior to every other running back in the game.

Number 1: Marshawn Lynch (Ring of Honor)

Overview: The best running back in Madden 26 Ultimate Team.

Stats: 5'11", 215 lbs, 97 speed, 95 change of direction, 99 trucking, 99 break tackle.

Why he is number one: In a year where smaller running backs are generally better, EA made Marshawn Lynch the top option. His Ring of Honor Freight Train does not expire (unlike Sugar Rush glowing X-Factors). While opponents can momentum-shift it away, facing Marshawn Lynch is consistently frustrating in a way that most other running backs are not.

Longevity: He is in Season 7 ability buckets, but his glowing X-Factor is not supposed to expire. This makes him the safest running back investment in the game.
